MGM Resorts International is among three or four companies interested in developing a casino resort in Massachussets since the state’s new gaming laws allow for up to three casinos to be built. The MGM proposed casino resort would be built in western Massachusetts which is attracting more interest among potential casino developers than the eastern part of the state. MGM Resorts is the first company to pay the state of Massachusetts gaming commission a fee which is not refundable as the first part of its application process for a licence to develop a casino resort.MGM Resorts International is among the leading casino operators in the world. It operates several casinos in Las Vegas such as the MGM Grand, the Bellagio, the Mirage and the Mandalay Bay Casino.
Along with its properties in the United States the company also has an important international casino resort presence with its casino resort the MGM Macau in Macau and it has plans to develop a major casino resort in Vietnam for 2013.Recently the MGM group dropped plans to develop the Massachusetts casino resort in the more rural area of Brimfield. The company decided that transport to and from the remote region would be a major difficulty and so moved their proposed site to Springfield.
MGM now plans to develop an 800 million dollar entertainment complex in the centre of Springfield. The company has bought tracts of land in the city in an area that suffered a lot of damage in the tornado that hit the state in 2011. Even before the tornado hit, Massachusetts’ economy has suffered in recent years so a casino resort would provide major employment for the city with up to 2 500 construction jobs and employment in the completed resort for up to 3 000 people.MGM would hope to attract about 10 000 people a day to its proposed casino resort which would be built over 3 blocks in the city centre and would include some existing buildings in the new development. There are plans for a 25 storey hotel, an 89 000 square foot casino area, retail outlets, restaurants, a cinema, a bowling alley and a conference centre. Other casino operators are interested in developing a casino resort in western Massachusetts for which there will be only one licence issued. These include Ameristar Casinos, Seminole Hard Rock Entertainment and Penn National Gaming. The Mohegan Tribal Gaming Authority has plans to apply for the licence to develop a casino resort in Palmer, Massachusetts. So there will be stiff competition for the one licence on offer.
