Sheldon Adelson to oppose online gambling

Sheldon Adelson to oppose online gamblingWhile many of those operating in the land based casino industry are involved in or are looking to become involved in the online casino market, the complete opposite is true for Sheldon Adelson the Chief Executive Officer of the Las Vegas Sands Corporation. Adelson’s position on internet gambling opposes him to those in the United States who are pushing for online casinos to become legalised. The billionaire casino owner does not want the future of gambling to include online casinos which he believes are a threat to society.

The Las Vegas Sands Corp was founded in 1988 and Sheldon Adelson remains its chairman and chief executive officer. The company is based in Nevada and runs the Venetian Casino Resort and the Palazzo Casino Resort in Las Vegas as well as the Sands Casino Resort in Pennsylvania. The company also runs extremely luxurious casino resorts in Asia through its subsidiary, Sands China. The casino complexes in Macau include the Venetian Macau and the Sands Cotai Central. Sands also owns the Marina Bay Casino Resort in Singapore. Sheldon Adelson is also involved in the construction of the giant EuroVegas casino resort to be built near Madrid, Spain.Sheldon Adelson claims that he opposes internet gambling as it could be a threat to vulnerable groups in society and it could also have a negative effect on the traditional image of casinos.
He is to set up a campaign to show that gambling online could be dangerous to the less well off, to children and to the vulnerable since it is easily accessible. Adelson has always been a major political donor but his donations to different political causes last year surpassed any ever made. He is said to have donated more than 95 million dollars. Plans include using experts and lobbyists in several states to back up his opposition to internet gambling. He also plans to launch a  group, The Coalition to Stop Internet Gambling involving many representatives of those who could be adversely affected by online gambling. Those who disagree with Adelson’s views, including several large land based casino operators, say that lobbying to ban internet gambling could lead to the growth of an unregulated, illegal online gambling industry. However, Sheldon Adelson is lining up for a major debate on the question in 2014.
